Meinung zum gefeierten Film Poor Things // Opinion piece on the wildly celebrated movie Poor Things
Poor Things wird im besten Falle als die weibliche Version von Frankenstein bezeichnet, im schlimmsten Fall als Barbie für Intellektuelle. Ich muss sagen, ich hätte weder noch gebraucht.
Es ist Jahre her, dass wir das Buch mit dem selben Titel in meinem Buchclub gelesen haben und ich kann mich sehr gut daran erinnern, dass ich sehr mit mir und dem Leseprozess gerungen habe. Die Gruppe (die meisten FLINTA*-Personen) ist komplett durchgedreht. Also, wir haben es gehasst. Als ich also hörte, dass das Buch verfilmt wurde, war ich nicht unbedingt begeistert. Manche Dinge, und das meine ich wortwörtlich, sollten nicht wiederbelebt werden.

Sie wurde von einem verrückten Wissenschaftler/Professor erschaffen (den sie God nennt, denn sein Vorname ist Godwin), der den Körper einer toten schwangeren Frau im Fluss gefunden hat und dies als Chance für ein Experiment sieht: er pflanzt das Gehirn des ungeborenen Kindes in den Körper der erwachsenen Frau und belebt sie wieder. Somit ist der Geist eines Neugeborenen im Körper einer Frau gefangen und ihre übernatürlich schnelle geistige Entwicklung wird zu Godwin Baxters Lieblingsexperiment für Zuhause.
Bella wird mit einem von Godwins Studenten, Max McCandles, verlobt, der angeheuert wird um ihre Entwicklung zu protokollieren, doch kurz vor der Hochzeit entschließt sie sich mit dem Anwalt Duncan Wedderburn davonzulaufen und die Welt zu bereisen. Years ago, we read the book by the same title in my book club and I remember distinctly that I really struggled with reading and that the group (mainly consisting of FLINTA* people) went absolutely feral about the whole thing. As in, we hated it. So when I found out about the movie, I wasn’t necessarily thrilled to see this book adapted. Some things, and I mean this literally, shouldn’t be brought back from the dead.

Was mich am Film wohl am meisten verstört hat ist, dass Bella komplett ahnungslos ist und den Männern in ihrem Leben vollends ausgeliefert ist, die allesamt nicht nur schrecklich sind, sondern sie auch nicht als das Kind das sie ist behandeln. Viel mehr sehen sie Bella als ein spannendes Experiment, aber vor allem als Sexobjekt. Sobald Bella sich ihrem Körper bewusst wird (was beim Menschen so etwa im Alter von 3 Jahren einsetzt), wird sie sexualisiert und ihre Neugierde wird von den Männern die sie beschützen sollten, schamlos ausgenutzt. Godwin Baxter verspricht sie seinem Studenten Max McCandles, da er nicht selbst mit Bella intim werden kann (seine Begründung: er ist körperlich nicht dazu in der Lage und außerdem ja sowas wie eine Vaterfigur für Bella). Mit Maxs Hilfe möchte er das Experiment das Bella für ihn darstellt weiter erkunden. Max ist sofort bereit Bella zu heiraten, denn er ist von Beginn an von ihr fasziniert. Selbst als sie bei ihrer ersten Begegnung mental noch ein Baby ist, sich in die Hosen macht und kaum laufen oder sprechen kann, bezeichnet Max sie bereits als eine der wunderschönsten Wesen die er jemals gesehen hat. Auftritt Duncan Wederburn, der Anwalt der den Ehevertrag aufsetzen soll, dann aber selbst Interesse an Bella hegt. Er belästigt sie (also fasst ihr in den Schritt wie ein viktorianischer Donald Trump) und steigt dann nachts durchs Fenster in ihr Schlafzimmer ein um sie davon zu überzeugen, mit ihm davonzulaufen und seine Mätresse zu werden. Ja, von da an wird es eigentlich nur noch schlimmer…
What disturbed me most about the film was the fact that Bella is completely clueless und left at the mercy of men who are all together horrible and don’t treat her like the child that she is, but rather like an exciting experiment and most of all: a sexual object. As soon as Bella is mentally developed to the point of becoming aware of her body (which happens around the age of 3 in humans), she is sexualised and her curiosity is exploited by the men who are supposed to take care of her. Godwin Baxter betroths her to his student Max McCandles, because he himself can’t be intimate with Bella (his reasons: he is physically not able to, and serves as some kind of father figure to her). With the help of Max McCandles, he wishes to further explore the experiment that Bella is to him. Max jumps at the chance of marrying Bella, since even when they meet and she is mentally a baby, peeing her pants in front of him and barely able to walk or talk, he calls her one of the most beautiful creatures he has ever seen. Enter Duncan Wedderburn, the lawyer who is supposed to write up the prenup but ends up interested in Bella himself. He sexually harasses her to check if she’s a real woman (aka, grabbing her by the pussy like some kind of Victorian Donald Trump) and then climbs into her bedroom at night to convince her to run off with him and become his mistress. Yup, it only gets worse from there…
Falls Du es nicht eh schon wusstest, ist das vielleicht ein guter Zeitpunkt um zu erwähnen, dass dieser Film von Männern geschrieben und directed wurde.
Es könnte sogar behauptet werden, dass es genau darum in diesem Film geht: die schrecklichen Männer die Bella umgeben bloßzustellen, vorzuführen, zu zeigen, wie Bella sie verrückt macht. Natürlich ist Bella offiziell die Hauptfigur, der Katalysator um das Schlimmste aus Godwin Baxter, Max McCandles und Duncan Wederburn hervorzuholen. Trotzdem, Bella wird hauptsächlich mit einem sehr sexualisierten, männlichen Blick betrachtet. Eine Sache die mir sofort aufgefallen ist, die dies unterstreicht, ist ihre Körperbehaarung. Zu Beginn stellt Max fest, dass Bellas Haare unnatürlich schnell wachsen. Natürlich beschränkt sich dies aber nur auf die Haare auf ihrem Kopf, während der Rest ihres Körpers (abgesehen von einer ästhetisch ansprechenden Menge an Schamhaaren) komplett haarlos bleibt; für die Male-Gazy Zuschauerfreude. Mir ist natürlich klar, dass es sowieso nicht möglich ist, einen erwachsenen Körper mit dem implantierten Gehirn eines Babys wieder zu beleben, aber ich meine doch schon, dass ein unnatürlich schneller Haarwuchs ALLE Körperbehaarung mit einbeziehen sollte und nicht nur an den Stellen, die gesellschaftlich als akzeptabel gelten.

Arguably, this is what the movie is about: the horrible men that Bella is surrounded by, taking the piss out of them, how Bella drives them crazy. Of course, Bella is the official main character, the focal point of the cast that brings out the worst in Godwin Baxter, Max McCandles and Duncan Wedderburn. But still, Bella is mainly seen through a sexualised and very male lens. One thing I immediately became aware of that illustrates this point, was the body hair. In the beginning, Max notices that Bella’s hair grows unnaturally quick. Of course this is only limited to the hair on her head, while the rest of her grown female body (apart from an aesthetically pleasing landing strip of pubes) is entirely hairless, for the male(gaze-y) viewing pleasure. I mean, I’m aware that it’s not possible to reanimate an adult body with the implanted brain of an unborn baby in the first place, but I also think that unnaturally fast growing body hair would probably include ALL hair and not the few spots on a body that are socially deemed acceptable.

Selten habe ich über einen Film so viel mit anderen gesprochen, wie über diesen. Ich bin ehrlich der Meinung, dass es ein künstlerisch sehr guter Film ist (weshalb ich auch meine, dass er die Oscars verdient hat, oder zumindest in den Kategorien gewonnen hat, die das am wenigsten Problematische am Film sind), aber ich glaube nicht, dass er die richtige Message rüberbringt.
Denn, wenn ein Kind sich seinem Körper bewusst wird und die erwachsenen Bezugspersonen in ihrem Leben sie groomen und ihr beibringen, dass Sex ihre einzige Währung ist, finde ich daran nichts revolutionär oder lobenswert. Immerhin entwickelt Bella einen eigenen Willen und, wäre sie eine erwachsene Frau in der Lage zu verstehen, was Sex eigentlich ist, würde ich ihr dafür applaudieren, dass sie es ausnutzt um die schrecklichen Menschen in ihrem Leben zu kontrollieren. Während sie die Männer ganz schön dumm dastehen lässt, diese mehr und mehr besessen von ihr sind, sie übertrumpft sie, während die Männer sich immer mehr nach ihr verzehren und sie besitzen wollen, scheint es doch so, als wäre Sex das, was Bellas Charakter am meisten ausmacht. Sie wird zwar immer besser darin zu sprechen und Auseinandersetzungen für sich zu gewinnen, kann aber dennoch nicht ganz aus dem Born Sexy Yesterday Trope ausbrechen und nutzt Sex als Lösung all ihrer Probleme.

I truly believe it is very well crafted (hence I think it deserved the Oscars it got, or at least it received the awards for its least problematic aspects), but I don’t think it relaid the right message.

Obwohl so viele sehr begeistert von Emma Stones Performance, den Kostümen und dem Set-Design sind (daher die Oscars in diesen Kategorien), würde ich nicht zustimmen, dass es sich hierbei um eine female empowerment Story handelt. Für mich geht es viel mehr um das Schicksal einer misshandelten Frau, die sich von der Brücke stürzt um einer ungewollten Geburt und einer schrecklichen Ehe zu entfliehen, nur um dann IN ihr eigenes Kind verwandelt und erneut gegroomt, sexualisiert und misshandelt zu werden. Es ist die Geschichte eines Neugeborenen, das im Körper einer konventionell attraktiven Erwachsenen gefangen ist. Es geht um die Sexualisierung und Objektifizierung von Frauen und Mädchen. Es geht um Bellas Kampf, einer Welt zu entfliehen, die von Männern dominiert wird, aber dabei nicht besonders erfolgreich zu sein. Für mich stellt sich die Frage, ob dieser Film nicht komplett anders hätte aussehen können, wenn eine Frau ihn geschrieben und/oder directed hätte.

While many people were in awe of Emma Stones acting, the costumes and set design (hence the Oscars in these categories), I wouldn’t agree that this film is a female empowerment story. To me, it was more the tragic fate of an abused woman, who killed herself in order to not have a child and escape an abusive relationship, only to then be turned into her own child and being groomed, sexualised and abused all over again. It’s the story of a baby being trapped in a conventionally attractive adult body. It’s a story about the sexualisation and objectification of women and girls. It’s about Bella’s struggle to escape a world run by men, but not doing a very good job in my opinion. I can’t help but wonder, if this movie had turned out differently, had a woman written and/or directed it.

Ich finde deine Review und Zusammenfassung echt super! Auch, wenn der Film/ das Buch hier eher als schlecht beschrieben wurde, hast du es geschafft mein Interesse dafür zu wecken und mir den Film auch mal anzusehen!
